"We are part of the earth and it is part of us ... What befalls the earth befalls all the sons of the earth.                                                                                                                                         ------- Chief Seattle, 1852

Mission Statement

The purpose of the Grundy County Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) is to construct and carry out a complete soil and water conservation program on all lands within Grundy County, Missouri. The district supervisors will work with all individuals, organizations and agencies interested in saving, maintaining and improving soil and water resources within the district.

History

The ominous dust storms that blew across the plains in the early 1930's set in motion the actions that have secured the commitment to soil conservation that we see today. The passage of the National Soil Conservation Service Act in 1936 paved the way for states to establish legislation that created Soil Conservation Districts. Missouri Senate Bill 80 was passed in 1943, and shortly thereafter, districts slowly began to form. The state saw the greatest increase in Soil Conservation Districts throughout the 60's. Grundy County formed its district in 1967. Today there are 114 districts, now known as Soil and Water Conservation Districts, operating to assist the private land owners of Missouri on a local level.

Cost-Share

The Cost-Share program offers financial incentives to assist landowners in implementing conservation practices. Building structures or developing other erosion control measures can often times can be an expensive endeavor. A 75% reimbursement of the expense of the practice helps to defray the costs and to encourage more landowners to participate. This program is funded by the Missouri Parks and Soils Tax.
